Xinjiang English Program

XINJIANG ENGLISH PROGRAM

Ulan Bator Foundation 1/07/02

THE PROGRAM

UBF’s English teacher program to Xinjiang was inaugurated in the Fall of 2001 at the request of the Education Department and the Foreign Affairs Department of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Xinjiang is looking for native speakers of English who are willing to spend a minimum of 5 months in Xinjiang.

As a ‘teacher’ you will only be responsible for holding conversations in English with the students in the classes to which you are assigned. You will not be responsible for any grading of students, lesson plans, discipline problems, etc. These will be taken care of by the regular teacher in the class, with whom you will be paired. Your duties are only to provide conversational English experiences for your students, raising their command of the language so that they will be competitive with students of English in the more advanced eastern regions of China.

This program is part of a larger one inaugurated by the PRC to raise the level of opportunity for peoples in China who have not been able to take advantage of the cultural and material progress experienced by the more developed parts of the country since the l970’s. Since Xinjiang is a multi-ethnic place, this means putting more funds into minority educational enhancement. The funding for this project represents the central government’s attempt to implement this initiative.
